In today’s educational landscape, attending school should be a source of joy, belonging, and purpose—yet systemic challenges, biased narratives, and reactive teaching environments often hinder this vision. This workshop aims to empower parents, guardians, educators, and community members to actively support Black children, disrupt harmful stereotypes, and foster resilience and self-advocacy.
Session Description
In this session, Monique Joi Johnson shares her journey as a parent, educator, and founder of Full of Joi Group, where she works to emphasize the importance of joy and belonging in education.
Participants will examine the systemic issues impacting Black students, including how the DEI backlash, reactive teaching, and biased reports impact student wellbeing. Real-life anecdotes will illustrate the importance of context and communication in supporting various stages of childhood development, and the importantce of supporting children in learning to use their voice.
Monique’s heartfelt approach is centered on understanding the emotional landscape of families facing systemic issues in education. She knows firsthand what it feels like when your child isn’t in a supportive learning environment—and she’s here to offer guidance, encouragement, and actionable insights for parents, educators, and community members alike.
Presenter Bio
Monique Joi Johnson is a passionate mom of two remarkable Black sons—one thriving independently as a young adult, and the other on the cusp of middle school. She is also an engaged aunt, helping to raise a vibrant niece approaching her high school graduation. As a mother and caregiver, Monique understands the joys and challenges of nurturing resilient, confident, and thoughtful young people.
Beyond her role as a parent, Monique is a dynamic entrepreneur, realtor, stylist, healthcare advocate, and founder of Full of Joi Group. Her diverse professional background is rooted in a deep commitment to empowering families and communities.
With extensive experience working inside schools as a Student Attendance Coach Expert, Monique specializes in identifying and removing barriers that prevent students from showing up each day—ensuring they experience a joyful, limitless education. She is dedicated to sharing practical strategies to support students within the school system, drawing from her own journey of navigating systemic challenges as a parent.
