Irreverent Art for Hope

Irreverent Art for Hope

Rosa Garcia, Urban Sketching PDX
Portand, Oregon, USA

Art is for everyone with something to say. Let's create art that uplifts our spirits and create hope for a better future.

Art has been used as a tool for hope, dissent, and collaboration throughout history. Writings by Martin Luther King Jr, Henry David Thoreau, Alice Walker, and Anne Frank are prime examples of the power of art in sharing history to warn us and help us cope when life becomes unbearable. Art is the throughline in hope throughout the stories of survival, progress, and revolutions.

In these times of turmoil where we are bombarded with news about horrific loss and crimes daily, we can honor those who we have lost through creating and collectively recording our experience for those in the future who need to know how we survived. Art is the seed we plant today to watch bloom in the future and it is also an important strategy for accessing joy and resilience.

Art can be done by ourselves through journaling, drawing, or writing and it can also be a community effort where we learn from each other. Everyone is an artist and I want to help people access their internal artist as a respite when times feel unbearable.

You’re invited to bring your preferred media, whether it’s watercolor, markers, ballpoint pens, or pencils plus paper or even MS Paint, and spend some time creating irreverent art.

Presenter Bio

Rosa is a lifelong activist. Having spent over 24 years in this country undocumented has given her an inside and outside view of how the American machine works. Although not a mechanic, Rosa believes that we have the ability and capacity to help one another not just survive but thrive.

Rosa is a single parent of a 10-year-old daughter who is the raison d'etre of fighting for a better world. It may be naivete or masochism, but Rosa has full faith that a better world is possible through community and solidarity.

Rosa's interests are urban sketching with Urban Sketching PDX, watercolor painting tutorials on YouTube, subversive art like graffiti, and finding easter eggs in the wild.
