Heather Infantry, CEO of Giving Gap, and Sharde Nabors, Resource Redistribution Director for New Economy Coalition, join us to discuss how Black non-profits are faring in the legal attacks against reparative funding efforts, and why its more important than ever to find ways to support Black-led organizations in 2025.
Session Description
In a world rife with societal challenges, nonprofit organizations emerge as beacons of hope, bridging the gaps and providing much-needed support to communities in need. Among them, Black nonprofits stand as a formidable force, armed with strategies that champion racial equality and justice, while validating the profound experiences of Black communities.
But yet, only a mere fraction of the $450 billion donated by compassionate Americans every year finds its way into the hands of Black organizations. The evidence, as stark as it is, spans across various sources of funding, from individual donors to corporate giants and institutional grantmakers. Black-founded organizations are left grappling with a persistent lack of support and routine disinvestment, hindering their ability to reach their full potential.
Giving Gap is the largest free searchable platform of Black-founded nonprofits in the United States. Our mission is to empower donors and funders to actively explore and support Black-founded nonprofits by connecting them to causes they care about. Together, we can ensure that Black nonprofits receive the recognition, resources, and opportunities they deserve to forge a brighter future for us all.
Since 2020, the New Economy Coalition’s Black Solidarity Economy Fund (BSEF) has democratically distributed over $975,000 to Black-led solidarity economy organizing. Moved by the 2020 popular uprisings, several dozen Black staff and leaders from our network came together to organize the fund, with the goal of redistributing resources to Black-led organizations building the solidarity economy. The fund is anchored by the BSEF Working Group which collectively makes all major decisions related to the fund.
