Session Description

Music has often been celebrated as the universal language of love, but its depth reaches far beyond that simple notion when we reflect on its rich history. Picture the soulful hymns echoing in Sunday morning worship, the joyous melodies shared at unlicensed weddings, the poignant songs of sorrow for loved ones lynched or sold, and the secretive, coded anthems sung by ancestors laboring in the fields during the heat of day. Each note and lyric carries the weight of our collective experiences.

Black Music is a powerful fusion of faith, hope, struggle, resilience, and pride—a vibrant expression that captures the essence of our past, present, and future. It’s a dynamic force that not only gives voice to our stories but has also birthed nearly every musical genre we cherish today, despite many being appropriated along the way. This music has been a transformative tool, breaking down barriers and fostering connections across racial and cultural divides throughout history.

Join us for an exhilarating session where we will uncover the threads that weave our past into the present and glimpse a future that unites us through the power of music. Get ready to be inspired as we highlight both celebrated and emerging innovators in the music scene. Expect to be moved by live performances that ignite the spirit and to unleash your own creativity as we collaboratively contribute to The Present & Historic Heritage of our Harmony. Together, let’s celebrate the magic of music and its ability to resonate within us all!
